Our Mission
Our mission is to produce healthful bakery products, to uphold the art and craft of bread making, and to continually improve on our business to benefit our customers and the community. For our more than 30 years of business, our main goal has been to serve our community with our high-quality products. We aim to produce healthy, nutritious food; we look to partner with local food producers and wholesale providers; we strive to work with and support local businesses; we seek to connect with our community.
To continually achieve this mission, we are driven by a set of core values that define our work and company:
Live simply
Work together
Be a family
Connect with community
Laying a solid foundation is one of the cornerstones for building a successful family business. It starts with a simple plan of action and a vision for what can be achieved. It takes working together to tackle any challenges. It takes a family of hearts and minds to keep pushing towards success. Most importantly, a successful family business needs connection and care for the community that supports it.
Over more than 30 years, we have had many successes and challenges. It is because of our commitment to upholding our mission and values that Bread Stop has continued to grow and become a recognized name in households and restaurants throughout our community.
Company History
In 1986, the first owners of The Bread Stop Bakery opened a small bakery cafe and pizzeria on Willamette Street in Eugene. It quickly became a popular lunch spot, and demand for Bread Stop’s bread grew. In the early 1990s, the owners opened a production facility in West Eugene, and Bread Stop began supplying the community with fresh, locally-made bread as a wholesale bakery.
In 2000, the bakery’s second owners introduced Bread Stop products to Portland, Salem and Corvallis, and Bread Stop began to gain recognition from a larger market and increased its customer base.
In 2007, Bread Stop’s third owners reached into southern Oregon to Roseburg, Grants Pass, Medford and Ashland. Bread Stop’s reach then spanned all the way from Portland to Ashland. Production levels continued to rise, and in 2017 the bakery moved into a new facility. Two years later, in an effort to reduce its carbon footprint and focus on quality products and service, Bread Stop turned its full attention back to the Eugene community and cities within a 100-mile radius.
Today, Bread Stop Bakery and its 30 employees produce over 100 products, service nearly 70 wholesale customers ranging from local food trucks to university dining halls, and supply approximately 30 natural foods stores, fine food markets and grocers throughout the Willamette Valley.
Over the course of 33 years and 3 families, the little bakery café and pizzeria grew into the oldest and largest, continuously running family-owned and operated wholesale bread bakery in Eugene.
Dave’s Story
Owner David O'Grady began his career at The Bread Stop Bakery in 1994 working for the original owners. He started in the packaging unit, became a delivery driver, and later joined the production team where he discovered a love for the unique chemistry and simplicity of baking bread.
In 2007, David and his wife Erica purchased The Bread Stop and became the bakery’s third owners. Today, Dave is the bakery’s General Manager and spends his time maintaining the bakery facility, overseeing daily operations, developing new product. Erica is the bakery’s Personnel and PR Manager. Together they work together to form partnerships with local business and the larger community. On occasion, you might find David mixing dough or near the ovens, doing what he truly enjoys: making bread.
